Excerpts from Reviews for Connections:
This is a very powerful and inspiring story about the human condition. We are all connected in some way and the book portrays this very well. In a succinct exposition of her journey through life, the author shows that it’s possible to emerge from a place full of fear and loss and, eventually, to soar beyond. Woven throughout is a wonderful playlist of the songs that formed the backdrop to her life and connection to her only sister. It is also a moving tribute to the author’s mother and the indomitable strength all the girls shared. I would recommend this book to everyone and have no hesitation in awarding it five stars.
I never stopped reading this book until the end. It is so full of love and music and yes, also tragedy, that it brought me both tears and laughter. The positive philosophy of the author throughout her adventurous life is so explicitly convincing. I strongly share with her the belief in the tremendous therapeutic power of music, her belief in the energy from above, her connections with her beloved ones. Thank you, Jennifer Dixon, for sharing these precious memoirs. They made me think a lot.
This is an inspiring account of a woman overcoming loss and despair. It is sad, warm, touching, heart-wrenching and spine-tingling. It is also full of love. Whether or not you are a music afficionado you cannot fail to be moved and fascinated by the profound effect that music has had on the author’s life and in her recovery and by the magical connection that exists between music and love. Here again is a woman who has shown extraordinary willpower, determination, and strength of character to reach to the depths of her soul and rise to the challenge. This is a book I shall be turning to again and again.
This book tells the story of a very personal journey by a remarkable and resilient woman whose extraordinary love for music and for her family brings her through difficult and challenging times. Her ability to use her fertile and imaginative mind as a turntable for a rich back catalogue of songs brings her to spiritual connections which are at the heart of her ability to process considerable grief. There is sadness in this book, but there is joy too, and much good humour. I found myself singing along a lot!
Once I started reading this story, I was transported to another place and just had to keep reading. Page after page. It really was like we were just sitting having a chat and I was learning all of these inspiring things along with better understanding the strange ways in which the universe looks after us from time to time. But unlike a conversation, this narrative had its own soundtrack!
